A spiral perm rod is a long soft plastic rod that fastens together by a plug, forming a circle. A spiral perm is made for people with long hair (shoulder length and longer).
Section the hair the same way as a regular perm , but you should make your partings twice as wide, ¾" for small or medium rods and 1"- 1 ¼" for large rods. You won't need as many spiral rods as you need when you do a regular perm. You will need about 4 dozen spiral rods if they are small or medium size and 3 dozen for large size rods.
How to choose your rod size
Small spiral type rods are used if you want a tight curl or if your hair is hard to curl.
Medium spiral type rods are used if you want a medium curl (recommended for most hair types).
Large spiral type rods are used if you have easy to curl hair and you want a looser curl or a body wave. Order spiral perm rods HERE
Wrap the perm rods starting at the bottom of the middle row in the back and work your way up. Keep the hair you are not wrapping clipped up out of the way. This is the opposite way you wrap a regular perm. We wrap a spiral perm this way because the spiral perm rods are large and hang down. They will be in your way if you wrap the hair like a regular perm.
Using perm papers on the ends of the hair, start winding the hair from the plug end of the spiral rod, leaving about one inch of the rod sticking out. Now wind the hair going up the rod. The hair should wind like a spiral slowly going towards the other end of the rod. The hair doesn't have to reach the other end that will depend on how long your hair is.
When you are done wrapping all of the hair apply your perm solution. Follow manufacturers instructions on the perm box. You may need two perm kits if the hair is very long. Most perms require you to put a plastic bag over the rods when the perm is processing. You will need a larger bag than the one they supply. Use a small trash bag or a plastic bag from the grocery store.
To remove rods, after neutralizing is finished, pull gently at point where rod is connected. Be careful not to pull on the hair when you are removing the rod. Now you can style your hair as desired.
