Multiple Line Textbox 1 Hi,
I have a question and would be very grateful if you could possibly answer it. I have really long (down my entire waist) straight hair and would love to get spiral perm. I am wishing to get a spiral perm like this:
http://technicaldepot.com/perm1.jpg
My question is… which type of the below perm rods is the best one to use to give that type of spiral perm?
http://technicaldepot.com/permrod.jpg
http://technicaldepot.com/permrods2.jpg
http://technicaldepot.com/permrods3.jpg
Which of the above 3 types of perm rods is the best one to use to accomplish such a spiral perm look… does it matter which type of perm rod is used? I'm confused because some people say you must use the longer perm rods… but then other people say you can use the shorter rods and get same look… is this true? Which type of perm rod do you recommend for the spiral look I showed you in the picture? Because I see some perm rods are very short… but then other perm rods are long… but then yet another type of perm rod exists that looks like a cork screw… I'm confused whether it matters which type is used….
Thanks very much for any answer you can provide,
Juliet

Hi Juliet , my name is Franko , I'm a licensed California cosmetologist and am happy to provide you with some perm rod information .
First off lets get down to the root of your question . You asked,
What perm rod is best to achieve a spiral permed look
(corkscrew style), and you provided pictures of three different types of perm rods .One of the pictures shows the conventional perm rod (short)which are normally used on hair that is no longer than 18 inches or so. You also mentioned that some hair dressers say that you can achieve the same spiral look with these conventional rods .As a hair dresser I know exactly what you are saying. I have worked with hair dressers that will tell you that they can achieve the same look, but its simply not true . They are usually telling you this because they are uncomfortable using the longer spiral rods. If your hair is any longer then 18 inches and you want a spiral perm I would recommend finding a hair dresser that is comfortable using the longer spiral perm rods. Now, lets get down to the other part of your question. You asked which spiral perm rod is the best for the look your trying to achieve . I would say the long straight ones , not the corkscrew looking one, I haven't had much luck with though's unless your hair is way thick/course. The long straight ones are used by wrapping the hair around the rod in a spiral/corkscrew style and you have more freedom of creation with these rods because you can determine the amount of turn you have in your wrap where as the other rod (corkscrew style) its already pre determined for you and does not allow you as much creativity.
I sell spiral perm rods on my site and would recommend them to you. There are three different sizes . I would have to see a picture of your hair to give you any suggestions of the size of rod to use.
Here is a link to the perm page where you can see the rods I'm talking about. http://www.advancedhairdesign.net/permanents.html
Well, I hope that answers your questions and good luck with everything,
Sincerely Franko of www.advancedhairdesign.net

Hi,
Thanks so much for answering my reply and so quickly, much appreciated!
I’m about to get a spiral perm for the first time and am VERY confused because every stylist tells me something different. Here is a photo of my actual hair (I put it in braids overnight and took the braids out so that’s why it’s curly).. here is the photo of my actual hair which is very thin:
http://technicaldepot.com/jp-perm1.jpg
As you can see my hair is VERY long. I am wanting to cut at least 4 inches off before it gets permed. This is the spiral perm I would LOVE to have: http://technicaldepot.com/perm1.jpg I also love this spiral perm http://technicaldepot.com/perm6.jpg
BUT here is the problem and what I’m REALLY confused about.
1. I went to several different hair dressers for a consult and showed them pictures of the spiral perm I want. ALL of them told me they will be using this type of short rod on my hair: http://technicaldepot.com/permrods2.jpg
When I tell them I feel that is NOT the right type of rod for spiral perm because my hair is way too long… they tell me it’s fine and that this rod will work just fine. One of the stylists said he will piggyback the rods. The other stylists told me that’s not necessary and they don’t do piggybacking.
2. I did find one woman who says the short rods are NOT good because my hair is way too long and the perm solution won’t saturate the hair completely and that she will use this long boomerang rod instead: http://www.haircinema.com/images/movies/photogrid_lilis.jpg
BUT then other people tell me those long boomerang rods are BAD because you can’t get enough curl near the scalp and that the shorter rods are BETTER. I am being told so many different things it’s driving me crazy and I don’t know who to go to. Do you sell this type of candlestick rods? http://technicaldepot.com/perm6.jpg
If I am forced to choose between the short rods or the long boomerang rods that you click into circle… which do you suggest to be used? My hair is so long I just can’t even imagine how you would wrap my long hair onto such short rod… it just doesn’t make sense to me. They said they would wrap the hair around the short rod like a pencil vertically… then overlap and wrap the hair up and then down the short rod over and over until it’s completely wrapped.
So it seems my feeling is right… that I should in that case cancel my appointment and go to the woman who says she will use the long boomerang rods? It’s confusing because the stylist at a famous very well known salon (he was on that TV show on the E channel called “Split Ends” and he works at the Salon Oasis salon in Boca Raton, FL) he is supposedly VERY good and tells me to use short rods… so I don’t know what to think =(
The stylist at Salon Oasis says he does spiral perms very often all the time… he says he will use short rods… I am very confused. I wish I could find somebody who does them using the candle stick rods.
Thanks very much for your input,
Juliet
-----------
I forgot to mention that the stylists saying they want to use the short rods say they will use them vertically… meaning the rods will basically be sticking out like a porcupine… not flat against the head as with regular perm. Sorry I am very confused as to who to choose to do the spiral perm because everybody tells me something different. Very frustrating = (
I just want to ensure I have curl as close the scalp as possible and have that spiral look. Somebody told me using the boomerang rods will create less curl near the scalp? What is the benefit to using those long straight candlesticks rods versus circled boomerang rods?
Thanks very much for your time & advice,
Juliet

Hi again Juliet , its kind of up to you at this point who you want to listen to, there are many different opinions on this subject. Hair dressing is like painting a picture and as hair designers our work is not a proven equation. Hair styling is an art form and there are many different approaches that we use to get to where we are trying to go.
I will say again however that it is my opinion that you can not get the same results from the smaller conventional style rod as you can a long spiral rod . For one , if you try to rap all that hair around a small rod (unless you piggy back ) your hair at the ends comes out more curly than the hair towards the scalp because of the expansion you would get by continually rapping hair over itself.
You have very pretty hair ! good luck with everything !!
again , there are many differant approches
thank's again Juliet , your Expert on hair care Franko .
